LG KS360 review

LG KS360 is a mid-ranger that will easily catch your eye with bold colors and quirky controls. LG have managed to create a handset that's cunningly full of character, though it's kinda hard to think of it in the hands of a grown-up. It does seem like a toy at first glance and those color combos are to die for if you are of certain age and attitude.

Yet quite unexpectedly, LG KS360 is quick to serve a bunch of nice features such as a large and vivid 2.4-inch display, full QWERTY keyboard, a 2 megapixel snapper and… believe it or not… a wee tot of touchscreen.

Retail package

The LG KF900 Prada comes in an all-black leather cube of a box that's at least as stylish as the phone tries to be. On top is the handset and with all the accessories underneath, each in its own small package. That arrangement we saw in the first Prada and the Secret later on.

There's plenty of stuff inside the big box so prepare for a long unpacking. Boy, it feels like Christmas.

Let's start with the essentials. There is a charger, USB-cable, cleaning cloth, CD with software and a manual. The supplied hard leather case is the same as the one that came with the original Prada, of duly increased size of course.

The new Prada entourage also includes a stereo headset with a rather chunky remote, attachment clip and a 3.5 mm jack adapter, so you're not stuck with the Prada branded earphonesThe new Prada phone comes along with 1GB microSD card. The 256MB card that came with the original Prada seems so helplessly dated but we're not sure 1 GB quite cuts it at the top of the line either. Anyway, cards of greater capacity are perfectly compatible. The KF900 handled a 16GB microSD card just fine.

The Sony Ericsson W760i is Feature-rich Phone Packed in a Small Package

Despite owning and using a Sony Ericsson phones for several years (which stopped last year when I got my iPhone), I never had a Sony Ericsson slider phone ever. So I was a bit hesitant whether to get the Sony Ericsson W760i as a back up phone for my calling and my texting chores since doing so on the iPhone is practically futile. What convinced me to get the W760i was its small form factor, solid features, and of course its classic elegant look. Here’s our full review of the Sony Ericsson W760i.

Features:

There’s no doubt that the Sony Ericsson W760i is a feature-rich phone. Interestingly, being the first Sony Ericsson walkman phone I owned, I noticed some nifty features of the W760i which were not in my previous SE phone, the P990i. The W760i features an accelerometer functionality similar to the iPhone. You can change the orientation of the screen from portrait to landscape just by tilting the phone. You can also use the tilting functionality in some of the games preloaded in the phone, that is Need for Speed Pro Street 3D.

The Sony Ericsson W760i also features GPS navigation, Google Maps, and WayFinder Navigator. These functonality help you out in getting around unfamiliar locations. The phone also features a 3-megapixel camera that supports both photo and video. A nice minor feature of the phone is the functionality to edit the photos you’ve taken for an enhanced and better look.

Sony Ericsson W760i Performance

The W7601 allows you to drag and drop files from your phone to your PC or vice versa. The phone offers attractive and and slick menu which are almost flawless.

The W760i also features a nice call quality. It provides 9 hours of continous calls and 400 hours of standby time. The camera produces decent quality photo even if it is only a 3.2MP camera. The phone’s built-in browsers work fine although if you are an Opera Mini fan like me, you’d wish that the phone’s defaulty browser is Opera. The W760i also works great on a mobile network. Sorry folks, but the W760i doesn’t have Wi-Fi connectivity features. It would have been better if Sony Ericsson has included this feature.

Design

Like I said, one of the reasons why I got the Sony Ericsson W760 is because of its classic and elegant design. With a small form factor, this phone is lightweight and yet doesn’t feel like plastic. The W760i is available in black and red design. And both emits an aura of professionalism and business-like. The phone’s keypad is amazingly big for a small phone such as this. Hence, texting is a breeze. The 4-way navigational dial looks cool and is not your ordinary looking jog dial. The phone features a dedicated key for activating the phone’s Walkman features. It doesn’t require you to slide out the keypad to access the Walkman menu. The phone’s memory stick micro is located on top of the phone, so can easily change the memory card if in case you’re using two or more of those tiny storage cards. Overall, W760’s design is elegant enough that you would want to display it to your friends everytime.

Windows Mobile 7

Microsoft has informed some of its partners that it has had to delay Windows Mobile 7, a much anticipated update to its cell phone operating system.

Although Microsoft has not publicly said when to expect Windows Mobile 7, partners who had expected to have a final release in their hands by early next year have been told now that it won't be ready until the second half of next year, sources told CNET News.

The delay is a significant blow for the software maker, which has been counting on the next version of Windows Mobile to enable devices that better rival Apple's iPhone. Among the features widely expected to be part of the release is advanced gesture recognition, perhaps along the lines of the iPhone, but possibly also using the camera as a means for reading gestures. Microsoft's Tellme unit, which focuses on speech input, has also been working on Windows Mobile 7 features.

The delay also comes amid stepped-up competition. Google is preparing Tuesday to launch the first phone running its Android operating system, while Apple has its updated iPhone 3G, and new models are also debuting from BlackBerry maker Research In Motion.

Microsoft, for its part, declined to comment on its plans. In an interview, group product manager Scott Rockfeld noted that CEO Steve Ballmer and mobile unit head Andy Lees did meet with 17 of the company's largest cell phone maker and carrier partners.

"They all expressed their excitement of what we are doing in the short term and the long term," Rockfeld said.

Microsoft is not expected to have a major update to its core operating system ahead of Windows Mobile 7. However, other improvements are expected to debut sooner, most notably an improved browser that brings the rendering engine of Internet Explorer 6 onto Windows Mobile. That update, still expected this year, should pave the way for Windows Mobile phones to display rich Web pages, including those that are home to Flash content and Ajax applications.

In addition, a number of carriers and handset makers have been working with Microsoft to add new touch interfaces and other features, separate from Microsoft's operating system updates. The T-Mobile Shadow was one of the first devices to benefit from such work, while more recent products from HTC also have their own custom interfaces above and beyond those included in the most recent version of Windows Mobile.

"Customers don't have to sit back and wait," Rockfeld said. "There's tons of stuff coming from us and our partners."

Rockfeld also tried to make the case that Microsoft's business model is friendlier to hardware makers and cell phone carriers than those of rivals, including Google.

"The thing that they are trying to do is they are trying to own the services," Rockfeld said, saying that is a move that has plenty of carriers worried. "They don't want to sit there and just become a dumb pipe."

Microsoft, he said, is willing to work with carriers to power their own services. "We're happy sharing the limelight," he said.

As for Windows Mobile 7, Microsoft has said very little publicly. Ballmer did make reference to it in a speech to enthusiasts in April.

During the speech, he talked about how Windows Mobile would outsell Apple and RIM during 2008. He then added: "And I think that certainly this should be a good year for us for sales, but the work we're doing on Windows Mobile 7, which is the next major release of Windows Mobile, not just in the Windows Mobile team, but across Windows Mobile, in Silverlight, the development platform, the e-mail, the back-end, I think you'll continue to see that as an area of major excitement and innovation for the company as we move forward."

Now that's a big one - the handset with one of the longest spec sheets we've ever seen has just dropped on us like a bomb. The Omnia HD is Samsung's go at touch-taming the Symbian S60 and is introducing truly revolutionary stuff.

A 3.7" OLED capacitive touchscreen, an 8 megapixel camera that should be able to humble even some digicams and of course the HD video recording - does it really get any sweeter? Samsung i8910 Omnia HD is surely one of the most interesting packages to look out for at this year's Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. With a specs sheet like that it's hardly a surprise but we cannot quite get Samsung's choice of name. There was nothing wrong with the original Omnia but reusing a name is not exactly suggestive of revolutionary. Oh, and don't get us started on the superscript. It look cool

Barcelona, MWC2009 -- Yahoo! today announced the upcoming launch of its new Yahoo! Mobile service, a highly-personalized mobile starting point to the Internet. Yahoo! Mobile will be available on the mobile Web, as an app developed for the Apple iPhone, and as an app developed for smartphones from Nokia, RIM, Samsung, Sony Ericsson and Motorola as well as those powered by Windows Mobile. Yahoo! Mobile initially will be available today through a managed beta program, with general availability expected in Q2 2009.

Nokia and Qualcomm Plan to develop UMTS Devices

Nokia and Qualcomm Incorporated today announced that the two companies are planning to work together to develop advanced UMTS mobile devices, initially for North America. The companies intend for the devices to be based on S60 software on Symbian OS, the world's most used software for smartphones, and leverage Qualcomm's advanced Mobile Station Modem(TM) (MSM(TM)) MSM7xxx-series and MSM8xxx-series chipsets for cutting-edge processing performance and ubiquitous mobile broadband capabilities. The first mobile devices based on this collaboration are expected to launch in mid-2010 and be compatible with the forthcoming Symbian Foundation platform.

"Nokia is very pleased to be in discussions with Qualcomm around designing mobile devices that can benefit from the high level of integration found on MSM chipsets," said Kai Oistamo, executive vice president, Devices, Nokia. "We are eager to demonstrate to the industry the possibilities that exist when innovative and open software is combined with advanced hardware solutions."
